Three inmates awaken confused and shackled inside the dystopian super-prison Cybolica. When a lethal creature breaches containment, they must set aside their differences to break free and defend themselves. But after coming face to face with death, they realize the creature wasn’t the real “monster” as they were all destined to become what they’ve so desperately tried to escape.
Cybolica was my junior year thesis film at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media arts. We were tasked with telling a story in one location with extremely strict guidelines. Despite the limitations we were given, both practically and narratively, and although our weekend shoot was brief, Cybolica is a labor of love from every cast and crew member, and I am forever grateful for their time and effort spent bringing this word to life with me. In my mind, Cybolica was always intended to be a proof of concept for a larger storyline about an apocalyptic world where abandoned incarcerated youth are used for government purposes, no matter how inhumane. Who are the real monsters? My hope is that this short film can serve as a gateway into the larger narrative that needs to be told.
